Join indigo dyer Judilee Fitzhugh and book artist Marilyn Zornado at the Newport Paper Arts Festival this April for a crossover exploration between their crafts. Learn traditional indigo techniques to dye uniquely beautiful papers and fabrics, and then use your hand-dyed materials as you create hand-built boxes and hand-bound books. Be warned: the results may be so gorgeous you find it hard to use them! (But you will leave with the skills to make many more.)
Details
Inspire your creativity with a relaxed multimedia approach to indigo and shibori dyeing: we'll explore the possibilities over two days of short projects. Learn to make and maintain a small, sustainable indigo vat, experiment with traditional dye resist techniques, and construct a variety of books and simple boxes. Each project will highlight a different aspect of shibori technique: practice your patterning and surface design on flat furoshiki-type wrapping cloths and paper for a hand-bound book. Create boxes with a bold statement exterior or a surprise lining -- or both! You will leave the class with several small projects, a head full of ideas, and a strong desire to dye the world blue.
